Abstract
The stern environmental impact of non-biodegradable packaging materials has forced the scientific community to develop biodegradable packaging materials (BPM) with advanced features to ensure the safe and quality delivery of different items with reduced environmental impact. In this context, present review article describes the contemporary advances about preparative methods and processing techniques to develop the BPM after using the different biopolymers with requisite properties like responsive nature, mechanical strength and bio activity. Further, the BPM with requisite properties has been used as passive, active and smart packaging for meat, fisheries, sea foods, fruits, vegetable, pharmaceutical and electronics items. The illustrations and schemes are used from recent publications to explain the concept, applications and existing challenges on the basis of their merit and indigenous contribution.
