Electrochemical behavior of liquid Sb anode system for electrolytic reduction of UO2

Abstract

A liquid Sb anode was investigated in this study to evaluate its ability to promote the electrolytic reduction of UO2. The liquid Sb anode consumed O2− ions to convert UO2 into metallic U during electrolytic reduction in an LiCl–Li2O electrolyte at 650 °C. However, simultaneous electroplating of Sb at the cathode prohibited the complete conversion, leaving residual UO2.
