Summary
Beginning in 1997, the National Reference Center for Nosocomial Infections began to establish a hospital infection surveillance system in order to provide data for prevention and control of these infections. For surgeons this surveillance system documents postoperative surgical site infections in patients undergoing selected indicator procedures. Today we have an overview on 211,637 procedures for a total of 17 operative indicator procedures. For vascular surgery we have collected information from 23 centers, i.e., 6815 procedures up to now.
The participating hospitals regularly receive their stratified and standardized infection rates as well as the equivalent data of all hospitals involved. A competent and meaningful interpretation of these data is necessary for internal quality management in order to avoid wrong conclusions.
