Abstract
This article provides an overview on incidence, mortality, stage distribution, and survival for adenocarcinoma of the esophagus and the esophagogastric junction in Germany using cancer registry data. For the period 2017–2019, an average of about 5680 men and 1380 women were newly diagnosed with this type of tumor annually. This corresponds to an age-standardized disease rate of 9.3 and 1.8 per 100,000 men and women, respectively. The 5‑year survival rate is rather unfavorable at 33.6% in men and 31.1% in women. Incidence rates have been increasing for several years, which is also observed in other highly developed countries and is attributed to lifestyle changes. Continuous monitoring of further development should take place.
