Abstract
Femoral neck fractures are frequently seen in traumatology, however they have a low incidence in young adults. This case describes the intraoperative breakage of a Kirschner wire (K-wire) in the acetabulum of a young patient, who was admitted for operative placement of cannulated hip screws because of a femoral neck fracture. With this in mind, several safety measures for the use of this material can be given: frequent checking of the location of the K-wire by X-ray, timely signalling of resistance, placing the drill straight on top of the K-wire, one-time use of K-wires and careful cleaning of cannulated instruments.
