Summary
In a 3-centre study, 128 patients with endoscopically proven duodenal ulcers were treated with cimetidine 1g daily. One hundred and nineteen patients completed 4 weeks’ treatment: 91 of these had healed ulcers and 28 were unhealed. A further 18 patients were healed at 8 weeks and 3 more healed at 12 weeks.
One hundred patients entered an 11 month trial comparing cimetidine 400 mg at night with placebo. Ulcers relapsed in significantly fewer, 13/49 (26.%), patients on cimetidine compared with 26/51 (50.9%) patients on placebo. Abnormalities in laboratory data occurred in both treatment groups but did not warrant withdrawal of therapy.
