Some considerations on the scattering of unstable particles by stable particles in the strong interactions

Summary

We investigate the scattering of three stable particles into three stable particles through the intermediary of an unstable particle or resonant state in both the initial and final states. The incoming unstable particle may be different from the outgoing unstable particle. Two cases are discussed: 1) The scattering interaction between unstable and stable particles is not singular. In the limit of vanishing widths the expression for the cross-section reduces to that describing the collision of two stable particles. 2) The interaction between unstable and stable particles is singular because of the exchange of a real particle (Peierls’ mechanism). In case 2), in the limit of vanishing widths, the cross-section is singular in the physical region. Further, in this case, the manner of preparation of the initial three-particle state is found to be significant in discussing the process.

Si esamina lo scattering di tre particelle stabili in tre particelle stabili tramite la mediazione di una particella instabile o stato risonante sia nello stato iniziale che nel finale. La particella instabile entrante può essere diversa dalla particella instabile uscente. Si discutono due casi: 1) L’interazione di scattering fra particelle instabili e stabili non è singolare. Nel limite delle ampiezze tendenti a zero l’espressione della sezione d’urto si riduce a quella che descrive la collisione di due particelle stabili. 2) L’interazione fra particelle instabili è singolare a causa dello scambio di una particella reale (meccanismo di Peierls). Nel caso 2), nel limite delle ampiezze tendenti a zero, la sezione d’urto è singolare nella regione fisica. Inoltre si trova che, in questo caso, il modo di preparazione dello stato di tre particelle iniziali influisce sulla discussione del processo.
