Summary
In the southeastern part of Switzerland (canton Grison), Alpine marmots (Marmota m. marmota) often cause damage on agricultural land and are therefore shot by gamekeepers. Since 1994, 3685 marmots were measured and recorded by the same technique.
In this study, the seasonal changes of body weight and the weight-loss during winter of adult marmots as well as the seasonal growth of young (“kittens”) and subadult (one- and two-yr-old) animals are documented and analyzed. While adult marmots have a mean weight gain during summer of about 32%, the weight gain of kittens is almost 6 times higher (183%). In autumn, kittens reach 18%, one-yr-old young 41% and two-yrs-old young 82% of the adult weight. The weight-loss of adult marmots during winter averages 24%, whereas the weight-losses of subadult animals and kittens are lower (18% for kittens, 7% for one-yr-old young and 8% for two-yr-old young).
The big seasonal fluctuations in body weight are caused by the adaptation to hibernation whereas their degree may be influenced by climatic and density-dependent factors.
The most reliable criterion by which to determine the sex of rodents is the distance between the anal and genital openings. However, some authors note that this feature should not be applied for sex determination of kittens. In this work we have shown that kittens can be sexed on the basis of this criterion with a probability of 95%. The difference of the distance between the anal and genital openings of males and females becomes larger until it reaches a maximum in adults. Adult males have a mean distance of 47 mm, females of about 20 mm.
