Conclusions
A technology was developed and adopted for producing high-density (porosity 12% or less) highalumina kaolin refractories to close tolerances, and of producing similar bricks but of increased thickness (345 × 150 × 150 mm).
It was found that the shrinkage of the fired brick is stabilized when 25% Polzhsk kaolin is added to the Novoselitsy kaolin to be calcined to chamotte.
The quality of the refractory can be improved, i.e., the Al2O3 content can be increased by using Novoselitsy kaolin alone while the density can be increased by increasing the proportion of the combination-ground mixture in the batch to 50–55%. In this case it will be necessary to use M-114 or SM-568 type roller mixers in place of the 115M edge-runner mixers, and an 88-ton stepped-action hydraulic press in place of an SM-143 toggle press.
