Conclusions

An improvement in the grain-size composition of the body and a reduction in segregation of the body when it is poured into the press molds permitted us to increase the spalling resistance of stopper tubes and to improve their reliability in service. Simultaneously there was a reduction in the percentage loss due to cracks in drying and firing.
