Summary
-
1.
Circular lesions were placed in the monkey's retina using a Zeiss light coagulator. These lesions caused typical terminal degeneration of optic fibres in the lateral geniculate bodies (CGL). The degenerating fibres have been stained with the Glees silver-method after survival periods from 6–12 days and using perfused material.
-
2.
The terminal degeneration in the CGL has been used to map the projection of the peripheral, medial and central region of the retina and the sizes of these areas have been compared and expressed in a numerical relationship, the factor of projection e.g. for the central region of the retina 400 in comparison to a factor 1 in the periphery.
-
3.
The macula is represented in the CGL as a centrally placed wedge, the medial portion of the retina adjacent to this wedge and the periphery in the lower tips of the CGL.
-
4.
The fovea appears not to be represented in the magnocellular layers 1 and 2 of the CGL.
-
5.
A summary of the experiments can be found diagrammatically in Fig. 10.
